How much does it cost to start an Etsy shop?

There is no cost in actually opening your Etsy shop. Etsy does not charge any money to open a shop, and there are no monthly fees to run an Etsy shop.

The first money you will need to pay is when you create your first listing and place it for sale. The fee for each listing on Etsy is 0.20cents.

When it comes to opening a shop – you can’t press OPEN until you have one listing. So you can’t work on all of your shop branding and then open; you need to put something for sale BEFORE they let you customize it.

So I guess you could say it costs .20c to open a shop.

Don’t worry if you don’t yet have anything to sell – you can upload a picture from your mobile and put that for sale and then when your shop is open – remove the listing, so there is nothing for sale while you gather your thoughts and move along.

Don’t forget to check out my big post on Opening an Etsy shop.

Once you spend .20cents putting an item for sale, it will remain for sale until it sells or is deactivated by you.

It expires after four months; at this point, it will auto-renew at another .20cents.

Transaction fees on Etsy

You will be charged 5% of the total item costs, plus shipping and gift wrap.

Payment processing fees

You will be charged a percentage for processing your payment.

These vary from country to country, and there is also a flat fee per order.

If your bank account is in the USA, you will be charged

United States 3% + $0.25 USD

For example – you sell a print for $2.40, and your bank account is in the USA

image example of etsy fees

Etsy will charge you .20cents for the relisting fee.

They then charge .32cents for the sale – (3% +.25cents)

They also charge you .19cents as the 5% fee for the transaction.

So from your $2.40 sale, you will reap a total of $1.96.

Now – I know what you are thinking now… wow, that’s a lot, but remember, with digital, you have fewer overhead costs, and mainly you can resell that item over and over again with very little input from you.

There are no running costs on Etsy, as I said previously.

Running any business costs money. You do need to invest to make money. These investments can seem to mount up when you first start – but I can tell you that taking shortcuts never really works out.

Here are some of the things I invest in to run my shop.

Final thoughts on how much it costs to begin an Etsy shop

There are no initial running costs to opening an Etsy shop apart from your first listing cost, which is .20cents. Etsy will charge you costs when you sell the item and when you renew an item. They will also charge you a percentage fee for selling the item, collecting the buyer’s money, and processing the transaction.
